Donna Sophronia-Sims

I am a found object assemblage sculpture artist from Birmingham AL. I dabbled in photography and worked as a graphic designer for 17 years and had never thought of making art with found objects, until about 8 years ago when I took a metal fabricating class at Sloss Furnaces. There I learned how to weld and use other equipment to assemble metal I picked up at a scrap yard into functional pieces such as small tables. During one scavenger trip, I found a piece of metal that resembled a face. I then went back to the studio and used it to create a figurative sculpture. I knew I had discovered something special that really resonated with me, and it was so much fun! I love humor in art.

My work has evolved into using objects made of a variety of materials, including metal, wood and plastic. Objects made of different materials have lead me to explore other methods of joinery besides welding.

Discovering the hidden artistic essence of the most common objects is an exciting revelation as I look at found objects from a new and totally unexpected point of view—transforming them into something beyond what they were intended, something surprising, and often amusing and whimsical. I love scouring for these objects, and the process of using them to create my sculptures.

My artwork has been shown in several galleries in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, and in juried shows. I received an Award of Merit at the Great Gulf Coast Art Festival, in Pensacola FL. Two of my sculptures were chosen for Alabama Artists Gallery, Alabama State Council on the Arts, Encore: “Selections from the Birmingham Art Association and Montgomery Art Guild Exhibitions,” Montgomery in 2009.
